Much of Stuart's work has been used on television. He also plays live solo piano and has written a classical symphony and a stage musical. His album Total Tranquillity is based around improvised piano playing with orchestration added on afterwards. As the title says, this is a work intended to be peaceful and create a sense of tranquillity. The track “In Flower” has a delicate piano melody surrounded by pleasant tinkles and string chords. It's like an ode to the fragile beauty of flowers while the sun sparkles off raindrops that have fallen on them. At some points the piano speeds up and here its melodic cadence reminded me of a track on George Winston's Autumn. At times the emotional feel of the album brought to mind Wayne Kelling's Observations in the Woods, because both albums have a gentleness and respect for the wonders of nature that has inspired them. In “Weeping Willow” an unhurried piano melody tinkles and a flute sound brushes around the soundscape, the impression being of the low hanging branches of a willow tree being gently moved by the wind. A couple of tracks are predominantly, if not completely, based around the piano. One of these is the almost sombre “In My Shelter” where a contrasting mix of wandering low and high notes, and occasional flurries, convey a sense of hiding away from the world and all one's worries. Total Tranquillity is a restful album that focuses on pretty things in nature, and peaceful but reflective emotions. As mood music goes this is a very good and graceful work. |
