12 tracks. Running time 59:14 William Edge has released another ambient work set in his fictional Sci-Fi universe many years in the future. The theme of Soundchamber is about someone who works in an ice mine on a distant world. Musically there's much that is familiar from his other albums; the album is divided into short vignettes (all under ten minutes long) and occasionally a refrain will trigger a feeling of deja vu. Most tracks are constructed with a combination of drumming, future-esque piano, synth lines, and pads. The track “Goodbye” could be a homage to Vangelis since it's strongly reminiscent of part of the Bladerunner soundtrack. Pretty synth lines with a hint of sax soar poignantly and wistfully while pads and melodic counterparts subtly add further emotion. Hints of Vangelis can also be found in a few other tracks, such as the kind of funky yet laid back piano in “Forever Tomorrow”. Arguably William is at his best when creating short reflective pieces without complex elements so they have an innocence and evocativeness, which for me is endearing. In this vein is “The Night Outside my Portal Window” where a repeating refrain like a lullaby plays out over pads and counterpointing melody. Listening to this piece it's easy to imagine someone looking out at the night sky with a yearning for other things and places. The closing track “Adagio” contains a typical mix of this artist's style with the addition of quasi-symphonic string effects. A simple drum rhythm mixes with the drama of the strings as piano refrains contribute further emotion. On certain parts of William's albums it seems as though he's reaching for a melodic structure that never quite happens. I wouldn't say that Soundchamber is his best work, my personal favourite is Little Verses, but anyone who has enjoyed his previous albums will surely enjoy this one too which carries his hallmark style.
