Another new discovery for me has been Rene van der Wouden's two CD set Altrostratus/Cirrostratus. Using mainly analogue gear it comprises material recorded between 1999 and 2002. This is excellent sky music, inspired by the sky and as free flowing and peaceful as the clouds. Not since Software's Sky Dive have I encountered music that conjures such strong images and feelings of being up in the freedom of the skies.
Some people are predicting the demise of CD as a medium for music, to be replaced by downloads. Call me an old fuddy-duddy but I think this would be a shame. There's something about having a tangible product and artwork that, for me at least, files on a computer could never replace. But one price people like me have to pay for this attitude is needing loads of storage taking up space in the house! It's the time of year when people expect reviewers to present their top ten lists. This time my list is of albums I reviewed during 2007 which I believe deserve special recognition, even though they're not all favourites and the most played. So without further ado, and in no particular order:
Deborah Martin & J. Arif Verner – Anno Domini Superbly constructed ambient music with religious overtones and gothic undertones. Laid back rhythms and grooves evocative of lazy days by the beach. Alexander – Tour of the Galaxies Electronic music to transport the listener to the galaxies and beyond. Craig Padilla – The Light in the Shadow Epic spacemusic that evokes the grandeur of cosmic wonders. Justin Vanderberg – In Waking Moments Sonically, atmospherically, and meditatively excellent ambience. Atmospheric beauty and lovely sonic textures lead the listener into serenity. General Fuzz – Cool Aberrations Fun upbeat tunes that are a joy to listen to. David Helping & Jon Jenkins – Treasure Beautiful ambience with Helpling's signature percussive style. Rudy Adrian – Par Avion – Sequencer Sketches 4 Atmospheric mind music with some sequencing. Jeff Sampson & Sara Ayers - Thrice Thy Heart Shall Broken Be A magical and mystical combination of male and female vocals. From 2008 I will be cutting back on reviewing. This is a decision I took with a heavy heart but several factors make it necessary. A reduced number of reviews will appear on Melliflua so please stop by now and again. |
