Achillea - Amadas Estrellas - Prudence (2007)

10 tracks. Running time 45:03

Achillea is one of the recording projects of Jens Gad, former co-producer of Enigma and now an artist in his own right. Amadas Estrellas is the second Achillea album on the Prudence label and features the lyrics and vocals of Spanish pop artist Luisa Fernadez with Jens' music. The result is an exotic sounding chillout album.

The obvious Enigma-esque elements are both a strength and weakness of this album. That musical style is enjoyable and sensuous but it does give the justified impression that old ideas are being rehashed. Indeed, the first track “Prologo” is a subtle reworking of the opening track on Enigma's MCMXC a.D. and The Cross of Changes.

Running through the album is a sensuality in the music and the sultriness of Luisa's velvety Spanish vocals. This reaches an apex in the piece “Amor – Parte 1” where the words are sung in a slow seductive manner. Layers of percussion and slow beats create a rhythmic structure while melodies and Arabesque refrains fill out the backdrop along with subtle flowing washes. The mix of textures gives this piece a kind of wall of sound quality.

The title track “Amadas Estrellas” begins in dramatic fashion with powerful vocals complete with backing effects in places, electric guitar riffs, and big brushing percussion and drums. For a short time it then goes into a more restrained passage with lovely synth washes and spoken words – presumably from a poem or story. Near the end of the piece male vocals sung like a cross between opera and Gregorian chant make a brief appearance.

Listening to Amadas Estrellas is the next best thing to actually being on a Spanish island in a laid back environment where the sun is shining and sangria is flowing.
